Residents give feedback on possible parking fees
La Crosse Parks and Rec propose parking fees at trailheads
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Local hikers are speaking out over proposed parking fees at La Crosse’s trailheads.
The La Crosse Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department is considering yearly and daily permits for parking.

That money would be invested back into the properties for maintenance, habitat restoration, and development.
At a public listening session Tuesday, residents argued that adding a parking fee would deter people from enjoying the trails.
“It would set up a whole bureaucracy of basically criminalizing parking at the park trails that we’ve had for 40 years free of charge,” says La Crosse Resident Shannon McKinney.
She says people would be more willing to donate to maintain trails.
Those opposed to the fees also say it would encourage people to park on nearby streets to avoid paying the fee.
