Residents help design inclusive park

Powell Park on West Avenue in La Crosse could be getting a makeover.

The La Crosse Area Autism Foundation is working with the city to redesign the park into an inclusive playground for kids with all abilities. The foundation sat down with residents living with disabilities and other residents Tuesday to help develop a design for the park.

The hope is to create an safe environment designed specifically for those living with special needs.

“It’s going to be textures and different kind of swings, and just things that assist their bodies the best way, but also that one piece where they’re not segregated with other kids to play. The interactions socially is a huge step,” Adam Weissenberg, president of The La Crosse Area Autism Foundation.

Some of the ideas include a calming area within the restroom facility, new play equipment, and fence surrounding the park.
