Road work to close section of Second Street in La Crosse beginning Tuesday

Road Closed

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A section of Second Street in downtown La Crosse will be closed temporarily beginning Tuesday, July 6, during Stage 1 of reconstruction projects.
Stage 1 extends from Jay Street to Pearl Street. Second will be closed to vehicular traffic between those streets, including their intersections.

The closure is necessary to allow road reconstruction near the La Crosse Center, as well as minor utility work underground, according to Matthew Gallager, deputy director of the city’s Engineering & Public Works Department.
The project will help support the La Crosse Center expansion, improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, and accommodate a future two-way urban cycle track, Gallagher said.
Stage 2, which Gallagher said is expected to begin in early August, will close Second Street through the
Main Street intersection, up to the south side of State Street. Access then will be restored at Jay and Pearl.
Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained throughout the project, and the signalized intersection at State will remain open during the project.
Recommended alternate means of access to Front Street are via King and Vine streets.
Motorists should be vigilant in checking for changing traffic patterns.
Vehicular access is expected to be reopened by Labor Day weekend, although some related construction may continue into mid-September, Gallagher said.
