Rockies’ Desmond breaks hand in spring training game

Colorado Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch Sunday, the Associated Press reports.

Desmond was facing Rookie Davis with the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth inning when he was hit by a 93-mph fastball.

The Rockies say Desmond’s hand is fractured. He will see a specialist Monday, the AP reports.

Desmond, 31, was a key off-season pickup for the Rockies, signing a $70 million, five-year contract after hitting .285 with 22 homers and 86 RBIs with the Texas Rangers last year. He is a career .267 hitter with 132 homers and 518 RBIs in eight seasons.
