Romaine Franklin Wenig, 80 of Spring Grove, passed away Jan. 5th, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, La Crosse, WI
He was born on May 20, 1939 in Waukon, Ia to Franklin and Erma (Wiemerslage) Wenig. He attended rural school in Dorchester, Ia, and because of family obligations was not able to finish high school. He later went on to complete his high school diploma.
Romaine was active in the Army reserves for many years.
On April 18, 1964 he married Sandra Garness at Faith Lutheran Church in Black Hammer.
Romaine worked at Mansfield-Argus in Spring Grove. Later when Mansfield moved to South Carolina, Romaine and Sandra moved up their fall wedding so that Sandra could be with him when he made the move.
Romaine later worked at J.L. Clark in Rockford, IL for thirty-five years before retiring, they later moved back to Spring Grove, where they have resided for the past 19 years.
The couple had been members of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Rockford, Ill, where Romaine was a very active member serving on many committees , he also served on the board of directors for J.L. Clark Credit Union in Rockford, the Methodist Church Cemetery board, and the Caledonia Memorial Committee, and he was also a great church usher, they are currently members of Caledonia United Methodist Church.
Romaine enjoyed cars (especially his 1961 red convertible), and his collection of John Deere Toys. He also enjoyed going to and watching Nascar Auto racing, and loved flower gardening and the comic Garfield.
He is survived by his wife Sandra of Spring Grove., his brothers Roland (Kay) Wenig) of Rockford, IL, and Duane (Lela) Wenig of Dorchester, IA, and his sisters Barbara Boyle of Iowa Falls, IA and Dorothy (Al) Oesterle of Rockland, WI. He is also survived by many loving in-laws and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Franklin and Erma, and his mother and father-in-law Clarence and Martha Garness, he was preceded in death by his infant brother Robert and brother-in-law Charles Boyle.
Funeral services will be held on Fri. at 11:00 A.M. at Caledonia United Methodist Church.
Pastor Debbie King Quale will officiate.
There will be a lunch, immediately following the service, and burial after the lunch at St. John’s Cemetery, rural Dorchester, IA
Friends may call Thurs. from 4-7 P.M. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Fri.
