ROTC Cadets brave cold for a challenging hike through the bluff lands

Twenty-six teams made up of cadets enrolled in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps from across the country braved the cold winter weather Saturday morning for a little competition.

The fifth annual Northern Warfare Challenge was a 22 and 1/2-mile march through the La Crosse bluff lands at 3,600 feet of elevation.

The competition tests both the mental and physical strengths of the cadets, who must each carry a minimum of 35 pounds throughout the day.

Organizers say it teaches them how to tackle problems head-on.
