Rural De Soto man dead, two others seriously injured in UTV crash

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the Saturday afternoon crash

TOWN OF WHEATLAND, Wis. (WKBT)– One person is dead and two others were seriously injured after a UTV crash in Vernon County Saturday afternoon. Alcohol appears to be a factor and none of the occupants were wearing helmets, according to the sheriff’s office.

At 3:07 p.m., the Vernon County Dispatch Center received a 911 call about the crash on Fortner Road south of State Highway 82.

Kyle P. Deegan, 28, of rural De Soto, was operating a Polaris Razr on a marked ATV route. Deegan lost control of his UTV, causing it to go out of control and strike a power pole.

Deegan, along with backseat passengers Austin Haskovec, 22, of Cresco, IA, and Justin Martinek, 22, of Cresco, IA, were ejected from the UTV.

Deegan was pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Coroner Betty Nigh.

Ryan Pritchard, 21, of Farmersberg, IA, the front seat passenger, was wearing a seatbelt and remained inside the UTV during the crash. Pritchard was checked out and released at the scene by EMS.

Martinek was airlifted to Gundersen Health by Gundersen Air. Haskovec was transported to Gundersen Health by Tri-State Ambulance. Both sustained serious injuries.

Forner Road remained closed during the Wisconsin DNR’s investigation and to allow Vernon Electric to restore power.

Wheatland Fire Department and first responders also assisted at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin DNR.
