Saint Mary’s Hockey receives $1M gift from anonymous donors
You know the age-old question of what would you do with a million dollars? Well for Saint Mary’s hockey, that’s not a hypothetical question anymore, it’s as real as it gets.
An anonymous family has committed $1 million to both Cardinal men and women’s hockey. The gift includes $250,000 outright and a commitment of the rest for future needs.
From initial discussions with the benefactors, Saint Mary’s intends to purchase new apparel and equipment for the teams. Plans are also in place to install a second scoreboard in the arena and improve the acoustics for an better game-day experience.
For the head coaches, who both are just in their second year, the gift is humbling and exciting for the future of their programs.
“I think what we can offer incoming freshmen, what we can offer our current players, what we can offer students here on campus and fans who come to watch our games, I think that experience is going to be enhanced,” men’s hockey head coach Ryan Egan said.
Egan says some of the long-term discussions for that $750,000 have just begun, but the first upgrades could be completed by this fall.
