School is now in session

LA CROSSE, WI — The first day of school has arrived! Teachers have been busy getting their classrooms ready for weeks, including those at Summit Elementary.

Stephanie Shepard teaches some of the youngest students there and says the first day can have its own unique, but predictable challenges.

“First grade jitters, you know the excitement,” Shepard said. “Kids are coming in, putting their things away. Finding their own place in the classroom. Finding their locker, finding their desk, all those sorts of things.”

This school year, students and teachers will notice added security measures in place in the School District of La Crosse. Many schools added extra security cameras and new technology to limit public access to the entrances during school hours.
