School supplies handed out to area kids

Catholic Charities and Salvation Army give kids pens, backpacks, clothes

Hundreds of kids have some new pens, backpacks, and shirts for the new school year.

Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army handed out school supplies and first day clothes Wednesday.

Together they’re helping about 1,000 kids in the area and it’s all thanks to donations from members of the community. They say it’s a simple way to help the kids start the year off right but they’re still looking for help.

“We still have children coming into the shelter at all times who still have their first day of school or some times they’ve been displaced from their home and they don’t have their own clothes or school supplies to get started in their new school, so we’re still going to take donations for our back to school program to help with those children,” said Salvation Army Program Coordinator Vicky Caya.

This is the second year these organizations have worked together on this program.
