Aggregate campaign donations struck down

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The U.S. Supreme Court opened the door for some bigger campaign donations.

The so-called aggregate limits on campaign contributions were struck down Wednesday morning.

That capped the total amount of money an individual can give to campaign Pacs and parties.The justice majority say the limit violated people’s first amendment rights.

Democratic senator Tammy Baldwin is worried this will lead to the people with money getting too much power in politics.

“Voters really need to feel that they’re the ones who decide the outcomes of elections, not big dollar donors, this sends the wrong message, and I think it’s bad for our democracy,” said Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

“What I think this means is that freedom of speech is being upheld, you all have the freedom to write what you want to write, donors ought to have the freedom to give what they want to give,” Speaker of the House Rep. John Boehner said.

The ruling does not change contribution limits to individual candidates and committees.
