Sentencing set for former officer in drunken driving case
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — A former Newton police officer is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 28 for driving drunk and having a weapon in his pickup.
The Newton Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/2hnrAbM ) that 30-year-old Dustin Hamell pleaded guilty to both charges.
Authorities say Hamell was off duty when he was pulled over Aug. 30 on Interstate 80 between Mitchellville and Colfax. His blood later tested out at nearly three times the legal alcohol limit, and authorities say he had a loaded handgun and unopened cans of beer in his truck.
Hamell has since left the Newton force, which he joined in 2012.
