Sesame allergies a growing concern
Sesame can be found in hummus, baked goods like buns and sushi.
UNDATED (WKBT) – Health experts here in La Crosse and nationwide are becoming more concerned with sesame allergies.
Starting in 2023, the FDA will require companies to list the ingredient as the 9th major food allergen.
That will be the same as companies do for ingredients like peanuts or shellfish.
Many sesame-allergic patients only find after having been diagnosed with other food allergies that they have it.
“Just because you happen to be tree nut allergic, if you’re eating sesame, continue to do it if you’ve had no problems. If you find that ‘hey, something else is bothering me’, then you may want to see your allergist and say ‘lets check for this also’,” said Gundersen Health System allergy immunologist Dr. Todd Mahr.
