Sheriff: Dog with 8 gunshot wounds found near trail

Fur around dog's neck gave impression it used to wear collar, officials say

Walworth County officials are looking for information after a dog was found with eight gunshot wounds near a hiking trail Sunday afternoon.

Just after 12:30 p.m., the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office responded to the White River Trail parking lot on County Road NN in the town of Geneva for a report of a dead dog, according to a release.

Deputies met with two people who found the dog wrapped in a blanket that was found just off the main trail, officials said. The dog appears to be a female bull mastiff that is yellow with a black face and weighs about 90 pounds.

Deputies said it appears the dog was shot eight times, and was then wrapped in a gray blanket that had white striping on the inside.

The dog was transported to Lakeland Animal Shelter where it was scanned for a microchip, but it didn’t have one, according to the release.

The dog had all of its teeth, was groomed, had trimmed nails, and the fur was matted down around the neck, which gave the impression that at one time the dog wore a collar, officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies are asking anyone with information on the case to contact the Walworth County Crime Stoppers by texting tip4wc followed by the message to 274637 or go online.
