Simuncak making big plays for UWL offense
This Saturday features be a big game for 20th-ranked UW-La Crosse football as they host ninth-ranked Oshkosh.
The Eagles snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Titans two years ago with a 31-3 blowout in La Crosse, but Coach Janus says this current Oshkosh team is a lot better than 2019.
The Eagles will be looking for fifth-year senior receiver Jake Simuncak to make some big plays. Simuncak is coming off conference player of the week honors after 5 catches for over 100 yards and three touchdowns at River Falls last week. He’s making the most of this extra COVID year, and for him, coming back to La Crosse was a no-brainer.
“I think just the teammates and coaching staff have been s awesome and influential for me, just making me the player I am, the team player I am, the friend I am,” Simuncak said.
Simuncak leads the team with 29 receptions, 408 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. The Eagles offense as a whole is averaging well over 400 yards a game.
“Our scheme’s been really good,” Simuncak said. “We’re running the ball at a very efficient rate. We’re throwing the ball when we need to and making the right reads. I think that just makes us so hard to defend. We have athletes all over the field. You can’t just double one guy.”
Simuncak says the Titans do a lot to disguise coverages at the line of scrimmage, and he expects a great game Saturday afternoon.
“It might not show on film but I’m sure [Oshkosh] will probably bring a little pressure, just because we’ve had a lot of explosive plays and been doing well on offense.”
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
