‘Slicing of the Golden Brat’ a tradition for American Legion in La Crosse
American Legion Post 52 holds annual Oktoberfest-themed fundraiser
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The Oktoberfest traditions got underway early Friday morning starting at the American Legion in La Crosse.
Mayor Tim Kabat made the first slice into the Golden Brat and proclaimed it the biggest brat in the City.
It’s the fourth year for this massive piece of meat made by Bakalars and topped with sauerkraut. And it makes for quite the hefty breakfast.
“This brat is 7 feet long and it weighs 70 pounds – that’s just the brat. Then you add in the bun and the sauerkraut, it’s over 100 pounds,” said David Johnson, chair of the American Legion Post 52’s executive committee.
To make sure it was cooked all the way through, it’s been slow rolling over charcoal since midnight.
The event is a fundraiser for various programs like children’s scholarships, veterans rehabilitation, and many others.
