Small chemical spill causes evacuation in downtown La Crosse
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A small chemical spill in downtown La Crosse Thursday afternoon closed down a city block and forced an evacuation of a building.
The spill happened just before 1:30 p.m. at Davy Engineering and Laboratory on south 6th St.
The La Crosse Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team responded.
A spokesperson for the company, Jennifer Buchholz, says a gallon container of Ammonium Hydroxide spilled.
Buchholz says the chemical is approximately 20 times stronger than regular ammonia.
The WKBT Studios were used a warming center for employees during the evacuation.
The spill was cleaned up in about two hours and everyone was let back in the building.
No one was injured.
