Snow leads to 20 car pile-up in central Wisconsin
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — Snowy conditions in central Wisconsin have contributed to a massive pileup involving about 20 vehicles. One person was hurt but no fatalities were reported.
The Marathon County sheriff’s department says the crash was reported Tuesday shortly after 2 p.m. Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Weber estimates about 5 inches of snow had fallen and says windy conditions may have limited visibility.
The collisions occurred in the Township of Knowlton, near the Marathon-Portage county line. Weber says northbound Interstate 39 has been closed, and likely won’t reopen before nightfall.
The majority of Wisconsin was under a winter storm warning. The National Weather Service predicted snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches in northeastern Wisconsin by Tuesday evening, with up to 9 inches expected in central Wisconsin.
