Snow shoveling cause for concern for physical therapists

With the fresh snow, many people are out shoveling it off of their sidewalks and driveways.

However, experts warn people to take it easy while removing snow from their property.

Physical therapists say it’s important for people not to over-exert themselves and take breaks frequently.

If you have a history of back pain or injuries, it is recommended you use a shovel with an arched handle to bring it closer to your body.

Experts say it’s also important to use the correct shovel.

“We do recommend that you that if you have a wide shovel for pushing, that you don’t use that for lifting as well, because it’s very easy to overdo it with that wide of a shovel,” said Andrew Severn, a physical therapist with Mayo Health System in La Crosse.

Experts say although there is no exact weight limit and that people should not lift more than they can handle.
