Sparta area firefighters stop garage fire from spreading

No one was home when garage caught fire

No one was home when a garage caught fire on the western edge of Monroe County early Thursday afternoon.

The Sparta Area Fire District was called out at about 12:45 p.m. to the 5400 block of Jackpot Avenue, about four miles southwest of Sparta.

When they arrived the garage was fully engulfed and it was starting to spread to the house that was less than 12 feet away. But a quick response from the chief and his command truck saved the house.

“This is the fifth time that I can think of since the fire boards’ given me the authorization to use this truck that I’ve actually been able to arrive before the other equipment and to make a stand on a structure,” Sparta Area Fire District Chief Mike Arnold said.

The command truck carries about 400 gallons of water. They’re still working on a cause of the fire… but they believe it started near the front of the garage.
