Sparta H.S. Earth Club gets state honor for recycling efforts
SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — A group of students in Sparta is getting a statewide honor for their recycling efforts.
The Sparta High School Earth Club is getting the Recycling Excellence Award from the Wisconsin DNR thanks to their food waste diversion initiative.
The students helped get a food waste dehydrator and composter installed at the school which turns cafeteria waste into clean water and nutrient-rich compost.
Club members say the recognition is nice, but they’re thinking more about their future efforts.
“It is an incredible honor to be recognized as a school. We don’t necessarily focus on the awards, we’re more focused on making our school as green as it can be and really putting that big step in sustainability in our community.”
As part of their sustainability efforts, Sparta’s Earth Club also collects the recycling from the high school’s classrooms every Thursday.
