Sparta man pleads guilty for role in La Crosse heroin death

LA CROSSE, Wis. — A Sparta man faces prison after pleading guilty to his role in a La Crosse heroin overdose death.

27-year-old Cory Koopman pleaded guilty Wednesday in La Crosse County Court to first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Koopman and 23-year-old Mitchell Perner of La Crosse were arrested for the death of Perner’s girlfriend Shelby Perkins, who died in May 2010.

According to court documents, Perner purchased the heroin from Koopman, and then gave the drug to Perkins.

Perner was sentenced in April to 12 years in prison. He was found guilty by a La Crosse County jury in January.

Koopman was scheduled to go to trial in June, but a plea deal was reached. A sentencing date for Koopman has not been set.
