Spirit Lake man gets 25 years for attack

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (AP) — A Spirit Lake man has been given 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of his roommate.

Forty-year-old James Naujock was sentenced on Thursday. He was convicted earlier this month.

Authorities say Naujock used a knife and fire poker in the July 2010 assault on Valentine Waltz.

Waltz had testified that Naujock stabbed her and attempted to cut her throat.

During his testimony, Naujock said he intended to beat Waltz but not kill her.
