Spontaneous combustion of tortilla chips ignites factory

Firefighters in Texas responded to an unusual call July 12 when a tortilla chip factory went up in flames due to the spontaneous combustion of the chips.

KEYE reports the Austin factory was trying a new blend of chips that “didn’t work out so well.” Emergency responders were able to contain the fire to the exterior of the building, but not before it ignited several other boxes nearby.

Three days after the first incident, firefighters responded yet again to reports of a fire caused by the chips’ spontaneous combustion. The firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and drowned the other boxes that hadn’t caught fire.

The building remained undamaged after both fires.
