Sports Spotlight 5-8: Central Adapted Sports League seniors
For today’s Sports Spotlight, we head to the MVC Adapted Sports League, which gives student-athletes with disabilities a chance to play competitive high school sports. The league offers indoor soccer in the fall, floor hockey in winter, and indoor baseball in the spring. And in our Spotlight today, we feature four seniors from Central’s ASL team: Sam Franke, Makayla Olson, Mathias Muth, and Madison Squires.
These four are a very tight-knit group of friends, who for the past year have been dealing with tragic loss. Their best friend and fellow teammate Mai Yeng Xiong died unexpectedly in a car accident last June.
They’ve carried their friend in spirit as they’ve played their final high school season, which included a second place finish in the MVC floor hockey tournament. The Red Raiders were poised to try and defend their baseball title from a year ago before the coronavirus pandemic canceled it.
All four have been honored as Student Athlete of the Month at Central High School and received numerous MVC awards, but even more importantly, their coaches say they all embody the true spirit of compassion and friendship.
