Statue commemorates woman who helped preserve Hixon Forest
Ellen Hixon raised $15,000 for preservation in 1909
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A woman who has had a huge part in shaping the La Crosse area was remembered Saturday.
Ellen Hixon was a house wife in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s in La Crosse. She worked on many things for the city, but her greatest achievement was raising enough money to preserve Hixon Forest.
Because of her efforts to keep our area beautiful a statue of Ellen was placed and dedicated on top of Grandad Bluff Saturday.
La Crosse city Mayor Tim Kabat says the statue really shows off the things Ellen worked to achieve.
“It’s just a beautiful representation. It has her outside enjoying nature, and then looking reall at this beautiful, lush, green resource that she helped to provide,” said Mayor Kabat.
Ellen raised about $15,000 to conserve Grandad Bluff and the surrounding area in 1909.
