Steppin’ Out In Pink helps young mom fight cancer
La Crosse, Wis. (WKBT) – — A young mom battling breast cancer was one of thousands of people walking Saturday for Gundersen’s Steppin’ Out In Pink.
Life seemed to be going perfectly for Emily Hansen, a 34-year-old mother of four who is happily married to her best friend.
But in April, a routine physical changed the course of Hansen’s life.
“It was really a shock when I was diagnosed,” Hansen said.
Hansen went into the doctor for a yearly checkup and came out knowing she had breast cancer.
“We don’t really have a family history of breast cancer,” Hansen said.
The news was hard to believe.
“I denied it for a while, and kind of said that I didn’t have time for it,” Hansen said.
Hansen then decided if she had to have cancer she was going to make the most of it.
“You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control what you take away from it. I told my kids from the first day that I was diagnosed, I said, ‘We’re going to use this and we’re going to get stronger and we’re going to find good things to come out of it,'” Hansen said.
And good things have come out of it she’s gotten closer to her friends and her kids.
She’s also learned to see the good in everything.
“There’s always somebody that has a harder situation than you have,” Hansen said.
She’s been keeping track of her journey on Facebook.
‘I’ve been sharing my story on my faith and fitness journey on Facebook and that has been an awesome way to kind of keep everybody up to date with what’s new and how we’re dealing with everything,” Hansen said.
She hopes one day it will help inspire other people who are fighting cancer.
“Like journaling my thoughts and my feelings and what I’m going through my experiences has been awesome, because I think I’ll be able to look back on that and hopefully share it with somebody else who might be going through something similar,” Hansen said.
And the latest entry in her online journal will be Steppin’ Out In Pink.
“I guess this has just been a really neat way to kind of pick me up here before my surgery and encourage me to keep fighting.”
Hansen has surgery on Tuesday and a fter that she will be going through radiation treatment.
