Student meal program underway in La Crosse to help students while school is out

Pick up locations are throughout the School District of La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The School District of La Crosse’s is getting free healthy meals to kids in La Crosse while they are out of school.

Starting Thursday there are pick up locations daily along ten bus routes throughout La Crosse.

There is also drive-up locations at Logan High School and Spence Elementary.

All children 18 and younger in the house can receive one breakfast and one lunch meal.

No identification is needed but those picking up meals are asked to bring reusable bags.

The there is a lot of reasons why the district has the plan in place.

“With the financial crisis and all the things going on we just want to make sure that we can help families and make sure that kids are well-fed,” said Lynn Halvorson, School District of La Crosse School Nutrition Supervisor.

About 3,000 meals were made by 25 district staff along with volunteers.

It is more than just the district nutrition staff that are helping kids.

Staff from GoRiteway are helping make sure that food gets to the kids in their neighborhoods.
