Students brighten the holidays for young cancer patients in La Crosse

Students at Westby High School dedicated part of their class time to identifying a social problem and doing something about it this holiday season.

Senior Hayley Cade of Chaseburg decided she wanted to make the holidays brighter for the youngest cancer patients at Gundersen Hospital.

She hosted a pancake breakfast to try to raise enough money to cross off everything on these young patients’ Christmas wish lists.

It’s a way for Hayley to honor the memory of two very important people in her life.

“My grandpa was a Shriner who recently passed away from cancer actually and he drove kids to Minneapolis throughout the week. And my grandma passed away from cancer and she was my best friend  when I was a child. And I can’t imagine kids going through as much pain as she did,” said Hayley.

She plans on becoming a nurse and delivered the gifts Wednesday to the 27 children on Gundersen’s pediatric oncology floor.
