Students celebrate Black History Month
LA CROSSE, Wis. — Students in La Crosse are celebrating Black History Month through signing and dancing.
The district sponsored an African American Heritage celebration Sunday afternoon at Lincoln/SOTA II/Montessori Middle School, 510 S. 9th St.
Students with 3.0 GPA’s or better were recognized.
Organizers say it’s great way for students to showcase what they’re learning in the classroom about diversity and Black History Month.
“What we try to do here at the La Crosse schools is support all of our students from their diverse backgrounds and we do a pretty decent job of it,” said Dempsey Miller, the pupil services specialist.
“This is our 11th year doing this celebration and we plan on having a great event,” he added.
Hundreds of people attended the event. The featured speaker was Jason Church, an injured Army Lieutenant and UW-La Crosse graduate.
