Students help pull invasive species around Lake Winona

Winona Middle School fights Leafy Spurge

Winona Middle School students got a lesson in helping out their environment.

Students walked the Lake Winona shoreline and took shifts pulling the invasive plant species, Leafy Spurge.

The students learned about the damage invasive species can cause and how they can help stop the spread.

Class instructors say the lesson not only helped out the environment, but also taught students how they can make an impact.

“This is one piece, invasive (species), and it’s part of a bigger setting of the lake.  Of all the ways people here in Winona effect the lake and this is a way we can give back,” said Winona Middle School Life Science Teacher John Weaver.

Teachers hope to make the first-time lesson a yearly event.
