Students in La Crosse giving opinions about free breakfast programs

Between September and January, the district served More than 300,000 breakfasts

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Fourth graders at Southern Bluffs Elementary are taking a stand.

They want lawmakers to continue feeding all students free breakfast.

As a result of the pandemic, the USDA has been reimbursing schools for free meals to all students regardless of their family’s income.

But that program is set to expire at the end of this school year.

Students in Marcia Gardner’s social studies hope to change that.

They started a letter-writing campaign urging lawmakers to continue program.

“Just saying what breakfast means. Why it’s good it’s good for everyone to have breakfast,” said Southern Bluffs Elementary fourth grader Sydney Vangen.
