Students participate in “Smarter Than a 5th Grader”

Elementary students from Aquinas, Holmen and Onalaska showed up their elders Saturday at an academic competition.

“Smarter than a 5th grader” is an annual fundraiser that pits an adult’s knowledge against the average 5-th grade curriculum. Some of La Crosse’s familiar faces, including our own Cory Malles and Mayor Tim Kabat, were paired up with 5th graders to answer questions about history, language arts, math and pop culture. The student contestants got to donate their winnings to whatever school program they choose.

“I would donate some to my teachers so they could improve their classes,” said Evan Baines, a contestant from Emerson Elementary. “Then I would donate some to the library, because that’s a good source for kids.”

This is the 6th year kids have held the fundraising competition.
