Study: Breast cancer gene mutation more like to cause rare tumors
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — A new study shows women with a faulty breast cancer gene could be at higher risk for developing a rare form of tumors.
Everybody has the breast cancer gene which keeps cancer from developing in your body. However, a mutation in the gene can lead to a higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
Now, new research shows those with the faulty gene are 26 more times likely to develop rare uterine tumors as well.
Some doctors say the risk is not as big as it seems. “It’s important to understand that we’re talking about an incredibly rare situation. And so 26 times incredibly rare is still very rare,” said Gundersen Genetic Counselor Peter Levonian.
Doctors say the first step in identifying the faulty breast cancer gene is to look back at your family history with your physician.
