Study says McDonald’s fries could hold cure to baldness

A new study released in the Biomaterials journal found baldness could be cured by a chemical used for cooking McDonald’s french fries.

Newsweek reports the Yokohama National University study shows the silicone added to the fries to stop the cooking oil from frothing, dimethylpolysiloxane, was able to regrow hair on mice. Scientists say the preliminary tests indicate the test would be just as successful on human cells.

The cells that drive hair follicle development, hair follicle germs (HFG), were mass produced for the first time ever with this method. Scientists said the use of the silicone was essential for the given results.

“This simple method is very robust and promising,” said Professor Junju Fukuda of Yokohama National University. “We hope this technique will improve human hair regenerative therapy to treat hair loss such as androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). In fact, we have preliminary data that suggests human HFG formation using human keratinocytes and dermal papilla cells.”
