The Latest: Maine driver killed in crash on snowy road

CONCORD, New Hampshire (AP) — The Latest on snow and rain causing accidents and closures on the East Coast and in the Midwest (all times local):

2:30 p.m.

Police in Maine say a 21-year-old driver died in a crash on a snowy road in New Portland, Maine.

The crash took place at about 1:45 a.m. on Monday just as snow was beginning to accumulate on roads throughout northern New England. Police say Connie Graham, of Hampden, was the sole occupant of a vehicle that struck trees.

Police say it appeared the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve in a snowy road. A passing motorist discovered the crash scene and informed police.

Graham was pronounced dead at the scene.

The storm left nearly a foot of snow on the ground in some spots in the Great Lakes and upper Midwest before dumping up to about a half-foot across New York and northern New England.

Numerous accidents on northern New England roads have left commuters struggling with the first major winter storm for most of the region.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for parts of the Great Lakes region and the Northeast on Monday.

WGME-TV (http://bit.ly/2hpDLSl ) reports a man died and four others were injured in a crash in Gorham, Maine. Crews worked to clean up the site and police said they expected the road in the area if the crash to be closed for hours.

State police in Maine say several other crashes were reported on the Maine Turnpike on Monday, mostly in the southern part of the state. Parts of Maine were expected to get up to 9 inches of snow.

Snow, freezing rain and rain could make for a messy Monday morning commute as a winter storm pushes further east.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for parts of the Great Lakes and the Northeast.

As of Sunday night, the storm had dumped more than a half-foot on several states in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions, causing dangerous travel conditions.

The Chicago area received more than 6 inches as of Sunday night.

Up to 10 inches of snow was expected to fall in parts of Michigan.

Further to the east, parts of Vermont could see up to a foot of snow, while New Hampshire and Maine could get up to 9 inches.
