Third graders make fleece tie blankets for local organization

Third graders at Emerson Elementary were volunteering their time and talents to help keep the community warm.

Tuesday was the 10th year that students have worked together to make fleece tie blankets for the Salvation Army of La Crosse.

Over 60 students divided into six stations to work on the tie blankets, as well as handmade ornaments and cards for their families.

Third Grade Teacher, Abby Ryan, says the annual event is always fun for the kids, but also teaches them about giving back to the community.

“The kids are so excited,” said Ryan. “We had a great discussion this week about what donation means, and why it’s important for your community. I had a child who said that he knitted hats, and he donated them to a local organization. So, that level of enthusiasm for donating and giving to our community organizations has just been overwhelming and astounding.”

Last year, 13 blankets were made by the kids with the help of their teachers and parent volunteers. This year, they made close to two dozen.

The blankets are being donated on Wednesday to the Salvation Army of La Crosse.
