Thomas arrested with a first offense OWI

Report says he has been suspended indefinitely by Iowa State

According to online records from the Ames Police Department, Onalaska graduate Matt Thomas was arrested early Saturday morning at 1:49 a.m. with a first offense OWI.

He was also charged for an improper brake light during the stop.

Thomas is entering his sophomore season at Iowa State. As a true freshman he played in all of the team’s 36 games while averaging 5.5 points per game.

The Des Moines Register reports Thomas has been suspended from the team indefinitely according to Iowa State’s student-athlete code of conduct. An athletic department spokesperson said Cyclones head coach Fred Hoiberg is aware of the situation but made no additional comment.

ESPN reports Thomas was bailed out of jail by his brother, citing a source close to the program.

Thomas on Twitter Saturday evening apologized for the incident. “Want to apologize to ISU, my team, family, friends & community. This isn’t me. I’ll learn from this mistake and be a better person from it.”
