Thousands expected to fill La Crosse Center during 40th Bi-State Classic wrestling tournament

Nearly 1,000 wrestlers competing, including growing number in Women's Showcase

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The mats are all rolled out and ready at the La Crosse Center for the 40th annual Bi-State Classic wrestling tournament.

The event happens Thursday and Friday.

Nearly 1,000 high school wrestlers hope to pin their way to the top of the tournament.

The event is split into two categories: the Bi-State Classic features the boys, and there’s a Women’s Showcase.

Last year, 52 female wrestlers took part in the first-ever showcase.

This year, that number is more than triple, to 180.

“Women’s wrestling is growing in Wisconsin and this is just proof of it,” said Jason Lulloff, the Athletic Director for Holmen High School and the event manager for the tournament. “We’ve sort of been the leaders in women’s wrestling world, Holmen has, so it might be surprising to other people, but we know that it’s really going to blossom over the next couple years.”

More than 800 young men will also compete.

Lulloff says he’s expecting roughly 3,000 spectators to fill the stands throughout the weekend.
