Top-seeded Halep upset in straight sets at US Open

Simona Halep became the first top-seeded woman to lose at the US Open in the professional era on Monday.

In the first match at the rebuilt Louis Armstrong Stadium, the No. 1 seed lost in straight sets to Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-2, 6-4.

The 44th-ranked Kanepi won the match in 76 minutes.

Halep, who claimed her first major championship earlier this year at the French Open, also lost in the first round at last year’s US Open to 2006 champion Maria Sharapova.
