Trump says decision on McGahn testimony coming

President Donald Trump said he will be deciding on whether former White House counsel Don McGahn should testify before Congress with the “next week or so,” but argued he did not have to allow McGahn to speak with special counsel Robert Mueller‘s team in the first place.

“That’ll all be determined over the next week or so,” Trump said when asked about whether the White House will assert executive privilege over his testimony.

“There has been no President in history that has given what I’ve given in terms of looking at, just a total witch hunt,” he said. “And yet I was transparent. We gave 1.4 million documents. We gave hundreds of people. I let him interview the lawyer, the White House lawyer, for 30 hours.”

“I didn’t have to let him interview anybody. I didn’t have to give any documents,” Trump added.

The President suggested Thursday on Fox News that he does not think his former White House counsel should testify.

The House Judiciary Committee has served McGahn with a subpoena in its investigation into obstruction, asking that McGahn testify before the panel on May 21.

A central figure in the first two years of the Trump White House until he left in October, McGahn was a key player with direct knowledge about Trump’s efforts to undermine the Russia probe.

In his report, Mueller wrote Trump “called McGahn and directed him to have the special counsel removed,” which Trump has disputed.
