U. of Iowa student ill after white powder exposure

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa says a counselor with a program that helps low-income students prepare for college reported feeling ill after opening an envelope containing a suspicious white powdery substance.

The university said a student who is a counselor with the school’s Upward Bound program opened the envelope Monday morning at Stanley Hall. The student later called university police to report the substance after starting to feel ill, and was taken to UI Hospitals and Clinics for treatment.

University police and the Iowa City fire department sealed off a shower, the student’s room and mail areas as a precaution. The suspicious material was sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory for testing.

The university says 47 students and staff associated with the Upward Bound program are being notified of the incident.
