Ugly Sweater 5K Run & Walk raises money for women’s health in Nicaragua

Another event at Myrick Park is kicking off the holiday season.

Around 400 people are participating in the Rotary Club of La Crosse Ugly Sweater 5K.

Runners started at Myrick Park and will end up at the Rotary lights at Riverside Park.

Runners are judged on how ugly their Christmas sweaters are with one person winning a grand prize at the end of the race.

The money raised from the 5K goes to benefit women’s health in Nicaragua.

Organizers say Saturday’s snow makes the race special.

“I definitely think that the snow will make this year’s run interesting. Hopefully everyone stays safe out there during the run but I think it makes for a pretty setting,” said Meg Carey, co-event coordinator of the Ugly Sweater 5K.

The money raised will help pay for early diagnosis and treatment of breast and cervical cancer, the major killer of women under the age of 50 in Nicaragua.
