University symposium highlights jobs in rural healthcare
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Job opportunities in rural healthcare were being highlighted at a local university on Tuesday.
Nursing students at Viterbo University heard from Dr. Pam McGranahan, Director of the Doctorate Nursing Program at UW-Madison, during a Cultural Diversity Symposium.
Dr. McGranahan spoke to Viterbo nursing students about the misconceptions of working as a nurse in rural healthcare and the importance of filling jobs in those areas.
Third year nursing student, Malaki Wessel, said this was a great chance to see all possibilities in the nursing field, and Dr. McGranahan even debunked a few of his own misconceptions about working in rural areas.
“I didn’t know that you actually get to do more in a rural health setting. I thought that it limited your options rather than expanded options and your scope of practice. You actually get to do more in a rural health setting than I had even thought,” said Wessel.
The Fall 2019 graduating class for Nursing also got to show off their final capstone projects at the Cultural Diversity Symposium.
