Update: Police release name in Monroe County Jail death
SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) — Update (8/1): The inmate that was found unresponsive in the Monroe County Jail has been identified.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Department report the inmate was Larry Schmieder, 69, from Tomah.
Correctional staff was conducting a cell check on July 30th when they found Schmieder unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to Mayo Health System where he was pronounced dead.
The matter is still under investigation from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

An inmate at the Monroe County Jail has died.
Early this morning, correctional staff was conducting a cell check when they found a 69 year old inmate unresponsive in his cell.
The inmate was immediately transported by the Sparta Area Ambulance to Mayo Health System in Sparta where he was pronounced dead.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Officer and the County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the death.
