UPDATE: Suspect identified in officer-involved shooting
LA CROSSE, Wis — UPDATE:The suspect in the December 30th shooting incident has been identified as Daniel A. Lexvold of La Crosse. According to rhe La Crosse Country Sheriff’s Office, Lexvold is charged with 3 Counts of Attempted Battery to a Police Officer, Criminal Damage to Property, Battery to Law Enforcement K9, Domestic Disorderly Conduct and 7 Counts of Felony Bailjumping. Lexvold will make his initial court appearance on 1/10/2017 in La Crosse County Intake Court.
1/5/2017: No officers were injured during the incident, however K9 Sayibe has received veterinarian care due to the attack from the suspect. Both Deputy Stoughtenger and Officer Deflorian are on paid administrative leave per department policy at this time. Deputy Stoughtenger has been a deputy for 14 years and Officer Deflorian has been with the La Crosse Police since June 3rd, 2016.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigations is conducting the ongoing investigation.
12/30/2016 (3:50 p.m.):
All lanes are open. Police have yet to release the names of anyone involved in the shooting. The condition of the suspect remains unknown. Police say they will be release more information as it comes available. In a statement given to reporters last night, La Crosse Police Department officer Brooke Pataksa said “The suspect exited the vehicle and according to witnesses was swinging around some form of a weapon. At that point, the officer used several forms of various uses of force and the individual continued to charge the officers and the suspect was shot.”
The officer has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
(12:00 a.m.):
Traffic on Highway 16 remains closed in both directions between La Crosse Street and Gillette Street after shots are fired during a traffic stop.
The La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department says they were investigating an incident from earlier Friday night when they found the suspect’s car and pulled them over. Backup from the La Crosse Police Department was called when the suspect was not cooperative with the Sheriff’s Deputy.
Authorities say once officers from the La Crosse Police Department reached the scene, the suspect got out of their vehicle and displayed a weapon. After various forms of force were used to try to control the suspect, the suspect charged the officers and was shot.
The police department tells News 8 the suspect was taken to an area hospital, but his condition was unknown to them at the time of this update.
No officers were hurt in the incident, which remains under investigation.
