UW-La Crosse breaks ground on new science facility

Building to be used for university's expanding science departments

UW-La Crosse breaks ground Wednesday for a new science facility.

The $82-million building will include 35 new instructional and research laboratories for science majors at the university.

University officials say the new building is needed due to a lack of space and deteriorating infrastructure in Cowley Hall, the current science building. Cowley Hall was built in 1965 and does not have space for UWL’s expanding science departments.

“When I first started, back in 1988, we had about 200-250 majors in Biology. Now we have 1,200 majors in Biology. So the growth has been exponential, and the needs have also grown,” said UW-La Crosse College of Science and Health Interim Dean Mark Sandheinrich.

About 296- million dollars worth of building projects have been started since 2007. Another 126- million dollars in projects are scheduled to begin through 20-20.
