UW-La Crosse rec sports celebrates 100th anniversary

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Rec sports started at UW-La Crosse in 1922.

So the campus celebrated Saturday with “100 Years of Playing.”

The recreation center showed off a little of the program’s history, and some of the changes made in the last century — like the addition of a new e-sports room.

Alumni and former recreation staff joined current students and staff for games and a little nostalgia.

“When you have a big milestone it’s important to celebrate it, right?,” UWL director of rec sports Jeff Keenan said. “So it brings everyone together, and we get to reflect back on the future – excuse me – we get to reflect back on the past but then also look forward to the future and see what we’re going to do next.”

The rec sports department also sold out jerseys to benefit the Recreation Foundation Fun.

It helps pay for activities for students who might otherwise miss out on some recreation or learning opportunities.
