UW-La Crosse welcomes new freshman class

Freshman registration, orientation taking place this month

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Nearly 2000 new temporary residents of La Crosse are checking out the city this month.

UW-La Crosse is offering its freshman registration and family orientation. All of the incoming students get a tour of the campus and all of the details they need.

The campus is expecting another big crop of freshman one year after having its largest enrollment of first-year students since 1986.

“Pretty on target, pretty comparable. Last year’s class was 1990, we’re expecting it to be pretty similar,” said UW-La Crosse admissions counselor Kara Korner.

One thing every future student and their family has to talk about is financials.

Monday, President Obama is encouraging the Secretary of Education to propose regulations to allow nearly five million students taking federal loans to cap their payments at 10% of their income.

That could be a relief, as according to USA Today, student loan debt averages nearly $30,000 dollars.

“It’s a big challenge,” said Ann Robinson, whose daughter Becca will be attending UW-La Crosse in the fall. “We’re going to work that out together, she’s been working, she’ll be paying part of it, we’ll be paying part of it.”
