UW-Madison students to get IDs for voting

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — University of Wisconsin-Madison students who do not have valid Wisconsin identification will be issued free IDs to be used for voting.

The university announced its plans Monday. Students who are Wisconsin residents and have a state-issued driver’s license or identification card can use those to vote and will not get the free ID.

Under the state’s new law requiring photo ID be shown in order to vote, student identification cards must expire within two years of issuance to be considered valid at the polls.

That created a dilemma for universities across the state, which generally issue four- or five-year ID cards.

The new free IDs will be valid for two years and only be valid for voting.

UW says it will cost $100,000 over five years to issue the cards.
